Bulgaria is a unitary state on the Balkan Peninsula in South-East Europe. It has a population of 7,101,900. The country’s population has fallen sharply over the past 20 years as young people have emigrated to Western Europe.
The country has just one level of local self-government: municipalities (obshtina).
