Structures and competences
San Marino is divided into nine townships (castelli), each retracing the boundaries of the former lordships.
Each township has a township council (Giunta) elected by local residents (formerly appointed by the military authority) and presided by a “captain” who is elected for a five-year term and who previously held military authority only.
