Russia is a federal Republic. It is the largest country in the world (spanning 11 time zones) and one of the most populous (146,844,710 in 2017). It is also home to more than 100 recognised nationalities (128). Russia is divided into several levels of subdivisions, each with vastly different degrees of autonomy and administrative arrangements.

Russia is a federation of 85 entities known in English as “federal subjects”. All federal subjects are of equal federal rights in the sense that they have equal representation – two delegates each – in the Federation Council (the upper house of the Russian parliament).
